SENIOR ENGLISH: TSHS 2019/2020

WEEK 1: SEPT 3-6

Welcome to your last year of high school!  After we take care of school business, and

get to know each other, students will write an evaluatory essay, and receive an introduction to the course.  We will also dip our toes in the metaphorical lake of rhetoric and learn about Logos, Ethos and Pathos.  Honors will also discuss Summer Readings.

EVALUATORY WRITING TOPICS (9/5/19):

12 A: One well-developed paragraph, titled "I've changed a lot since September 2016".

12 H: A 3-Paragraph short essay, entitled "What I Love and Hate about being a senior".

WEEK 2: SEPT 9-13

This week, we'll begin to focus on literature.  We'll start by exploring the concept of a "hero".  We'll open the BIG PURPLE BOOK for the first time, and enter the world of Beowulf.

Monday will be spent doing the County Pre-Test Assessment: Rm. 102

On Tuesday, we'll look at heroes in popular culture, film and literature.

After a short discussion of last week's evaluatory writing and a notebook/pen check --

Tuesday 9/10 Warm-Up: Brief Constructed Response, 2-4 Sentences (BCR)-

Who is your favorite hero in film or literature, and why?

Students will explore the first 3-4 characteristics of the Epic Hero.

Wednesday 9/11 Warm-Up: Brief Constructed Response, 2-4 Sentences (BCR)-

Identify one real person who fits the first 3 criteria of an"Epic Hero".

Students will explore characteristics 4-7 of the Epic Hero.

Thursday 9/12 Warm-Up: Brief Constructed Response, 2-4 Sentences (BCR)-

On Monday, we'll look at the historical setting of Beowulf.  New terms will include:

Bards, Paganism, Warrior-King, Christianization

Why do you think Christians use a tree to celebrate the birth of Christ?  How about a Rabbit and eggs to celebrate his rebirth?

Tuesday 9/17 Warm-Up: 

Write a poem (at least 4 lines), and be prepared to read it out loud.

Exploring the English Sonnet.  p.296 in Brit Lit (That purple book).

Wednesday 9/18 Warm-Up: 

Write ONE sentence that explains Paganism.

Bards, the Warrior-King and Hubris explained!  We finally enter the epic tale of Beowulf.

WEEK 4: SEPT 23-27

This week, we'll delve further into Beowulf, exploring the characters, plot, conflicts and metaphors.

Thursday 9/26 Warm-Up: (2-Hour Early Dismissal)

Write a classified ad from Hrothgar to the general public, seeking a hero to save his people (the Danes) from Grendel.

Friday 9/27: HOMEWORK ASSIGNED: 65 PRODUCT POINTS (TAKE-HOME QUIZ)

Reading: Beowulf (finish animated film) Beowulf faces the wrath of Grendel's mother.

HOMEWORK: Cite one fictional character that you believe fits at least 6 of the 7 criteria of an epic hero, and create a sheet that shows why this character is an epic hero.  Use

THIS EXAMPLE as a guide.  MAKE YOURS LOOK LIKE THE EXAMPLE.  NOTE THE POINTS

LISTED IN RED.   DUE MONDAY AT START OF CLASS.
